Letters

Jim Reilly, sailor in Voltaire

Hello Mac,

It has been some time since I have looked at your web-site but I was very pleased to see that the Voltaire section has expanded considerably over time.  I was delighted to read the contribution by Graeme Dodds regarding his Grandfather - Robert Lawson who was a shipmate of my Dad.  I heard Bob Lawson's name mentioned many times by my Dad - he held him in very high regard.

The photos are fantastic also.

My Dad (Jim Reilly) is in the 2nd photo from the top of the page below. He is the young man 2nd from right in the centre row.

I was pleased to see that there is a great deal of interest in Roger Coward's book "Sailors in Cages".  You should know that many of the names in the book were changed by Roger Coward (perhaps in instances where he could not contact the individuals for permission).  My Dad is referred to as "Petty-Officer Lines" in the book. He was quite pleased with the promotion since he was actually an Able-Bodied Seaman.

All the best,

Roderick Reilly
