Dutch Submarine Operations. WW2, 1941-1945
I am indebted to the many contributers and co-webmasters of this site: The Submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy. http://www.dutchsubmarines.com for the source material from which I have produced this work. Mackenzie J. Gregory. Melbourne, Australia. Easter Saturday, the 19th. of April. 2003.
Dutch Submarine Operations. WW2, 1941 -1945. Table 1.

Dutch Submarine Operations. WW2, 1941-1945. Table 3. Tonnages sunk, and ships sunk in rank order by calendar year.
Dutch Submarine Operations. WW2, 1939-1945. Table 4. Dutch submarines lost in WW2 . K-XIII Scuttled to prevent capture when Germany invaded Netherlands. K-XVI Torpedoed and lost. K-XVII Lost to a mine. O-16 Lost to a mine. K-XVIII Scuttled to prevent capture. O-8 Captured by Germans and recommissioned as U-D1. O-11 Scuttled to prevent capture. O-12 Scuttled, but raised by Germans and recommissioned as U-D2. O-13 Lost on patrol 1940. O-16 Lost to a mine. O-19 Stranded on Ladd Reef. O-20 Sunk by Japanese. O-22 Lost with all hands 1940, may have struck a mine. O-25 Scuttled, but raised by Germans and recommissioned as U-D3. O-26 Not launched when Germany invaded Netherlands, the Germans completed her, and commissioned this Boat as U-D4. 0-27 Scuttled but completed by the Germans and commissioned as U-D5. The total of Boats lost is thus 16, but that includes 8 that were captured or scuttled, 5 of which were commissioned into the Imperial German Navy as U-D1. U-D2, U-D3, U-D4, and U-D5. Dutch Submarine Operations. WW2, 1941-1945. Table 5 Tonnage sunk per Submarine lost Although 16 Submarines were lost in WW2 to all causes, 8 of these were captured, or scuttled to prevent their capture by the enemy, to ascertain the tonnage of enemy shipping sunk per Submarine lost during WW2, it seems unreasonable to include those 8 Boats. To arrive at the tonnage figure for each Boat lost I am going to use only the 8 Boats that were lost on operations during WW2. Totals Submarines Lost. 8 Total Tonnage sunk 168,183 Tonnage sunk per Dutch Submarine Lost in WW2 is 22,022 tons. If one looks at: The Results Achieved by Submarine Fleets verses their Losses in WW2, which I prepared for my "The Role of the Submarine in World War 2" and which is reproduced on my Ahoy. Mac's Web Log, then out of the 6 nations involved, if we include the Dutch Submarine Fleet, although it sank the least number of ships and the least tonnage sunk, it lost the least number of Boats, and would rate Second after the U.S.
