James Tate was a cook on board Royal Charter and perished in the wreck

Royal Charter

Hello, I came across your site on the internet and wonder what info you have regarding the Royal Charter. My gr.gr.gr. grandfather James Tate was a cook on board and perished in the wreck. He is buried at Pentraeth Cemetery in a grave with 6 apparently. I am always trying to find written documenation showing he was on board and I wonder if you have anything in that regard? I collect anything to do with the Royal Charter!  Thanks very much in advance.

Hello Norm,

When searching for Manus Boyle a 26 year old miner who perished in the Royal Charter, he was a relative of the wife of a US professor, I spent ages at our National Archive in Melbourne looking at microfishe records, and on Reel VPRS 3506 Reel 19 I found the Outward Passenger lists for July-December 1859, and it contained at frame 450 the passenger list for the Royal Charter voyage that came to grief off Wales.

(see "Manus Boyle, was one of the passangers on the Royal Charter" and "Manus Boyle from the Royal Charter found")

I only copied two pages, one of which carried the details of Manus Boyle.

Unfortunately your James Tate is not listed on the two pages of passengers that I have.

These pages list the Port of Embarcation, Names of Passengers, Age of each adult of 12 and upwards ( married or Single ) Children between 1 and 12 years old ( male or female ) Infants ( male or female ) Profession, Occupation, or Calling of Passenger, State whether English, Scotch, or Irish, Port at which Passengers have contracted to land.

Unfortunately at an age of 85, and with AHOY taking a great deal of my efforts, I do not have the time to revisit the National archives to pursue the details for James Tate.

Best regards,
Mac.

Wow. Thanks for such a detailed, interesting email Mac! It was just a hunch that I emailed you, thinking you might have had it handy. After all, we would never find what we're looking for in life if we don't ask. Thanks again and best of health to you in your ongoing projects.
