Jack Doherty, ships cook the Volendam

March 13, 2010

hello Mac

Just been looking at your website
my dad used to sail as ships cook on the Volendam around 1941 to 1945.

My dad was Jack Doherty and later he sailed with P&O cruise ships to Australia in the 50's and 60's

I read with interest your articles. Keep up your fantastic web. (see "Operation Menace." September 23, 24, 25, 1940. HMAS Australia and the debacle at Dakar with General Charles de Gaulle)

For a lot of us, this is about the only real social history of the time and of our parents as most other accounts are just not there.

If anyone knew my dad I'd be pleased to hear from them. He used to rave about Australia but unfortunately mum wanted to stay in Blighty. Ah well

Regards
Terence Doherty

Terence,

Thank you for your nice comments about AHOY, a joint venture with my web master Terry Kearns in Atlanta Georgia, without whom I would not be able to operate.

We do try to record events that otherwise may well be lost for posterity, and enjoy it all at the same time, it is comments like yours that make it worthwhile.

I can still recall seeing Volendam being towed stern first after she had been torpedoed.

Best regards,
Mac.
