The Enigma of Sir Anthony Eden
When Foreign Minister in the Chamberlain Government Eden took a bold move by resigning his Ministership as he was at odds with his Prime Minister on his appeasement policy with Hitler and his Germany. But like Churchill he was careful not to publicly decry Chamberlain and his government, both men were hoping to to be invited to rejoin the government benches, but it was not to be. I have always held the view that Eden was rather a weak character, his Prime Ministership was not a successful one, and his handling of the Suez crisis rather inept, and a real disaster. The US reaction left Eden out on a limb struggling to be seen as a real player in that crisis, and forced to back down by President Dwight Eisenhower. |
