The Purple Heart. The United States Oldest Military Award. In the United States, a new 37 cent stamp has just been released by their Postal Service on Friday the 30th. of May 2003, to commemorative the US oldest Military Award, the Purple Heart. This stamp features a photograph of the Purple Heart that in 1968 was awarded to a Marine Lieutenant Colonel, James Loftus Fowler for his service in Vietnam. Originally this medal was a " badge of distinction for meritorious action." but this medal is these days awarded to members of the United States services who are either killed or wounded in action. |
