Writing a history of the Sunderlands that were built at Dumbarton

Hi Mac

I stumbled on your site while researching about Sunderland flying boats. I am trying to write a history of the Sunderlands that were built at Dumbarton on the River Clyde here in Scotland – (just across from Greenock where you embarked on HMAS Australia ?). I am also trying to write about RAF Greenock and the MAEE (Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment) that was located in the same area.

Anyway, I discovered this photo (I think it was taken by Terry Callen?) on the Australian War Memorial site two days ago – I guess you have seen it before? It is the most poignant photo I think I have ever seen. Yesterday was Remembrance Day and I felt spurred on to try and find out who the poor souls were that did not make it. Thank you for such an amazing insight into the rescue. I have shared all this with my father who served initially as a compass adjuster with coastal command and then latterly as a Navigator. It is important that we do not forget the ultimate sacrifices these men made.

Cheers
Hamish Mitchell
