Were Bruce Cutler and to-be-wife Annie Waller were destined to board SS Athenia?

November 26, 2012

Dear Mac

I am researching a book on the four-generation Sydney tailoring firm of J H Cutler. Family lore says Bruce Cutler and to-be-wife Annie Waller were destined to board SS Athenia in Liverpool on 2 September 1939 but were late arriving at the Docks and missed boarding. Do you know if a passenger list exists that might contain their names so that I can verify (or other) this story?

DAVID,

Neither Bruce Cutler or Annie Waller  appear on any of the lists of survivors for Athenia that I have.

Here is a small list of Australians aboard her.

Australian Athenia survivors.

A short list of Australian survivors of  Athenia sinking (National Archives of AustraliaPrime Minister's Dept. Corresp.).

BALMAIN Donald
BELLOTTI Ethel
DEMPSEY James
EDGECOMBE Aimee E.
MURPHY Mary M.
PORTER Dorothy
PORTER Hilton
TOMLINSON Henry E.

Regards,
Mac.

Thanks for getting back to me, Mack. This question is a little more complicated as the story goes that the couple did not board the ship. Is there an extant list of the original passenger list, as opposed to the survivors?

David

David,

Not that I know about.

Sorry.

Regards.
Mac.
