U-534 was sunk by Squadron 86 Regarding a correction to the article, "German U-Boat U-534. Her Three Separate Lives. From 1942 /1996, and is still on display near Liverpool." Dear Mr Gregory, I hope that you do not mind me writing to you, but I think you may have a mistake in the above article. The pilot of the aircraft which sank U534 was my mother's cousin and the aircraft was from 86 Squadron, based at Tain, Scotland. Documentation that I seen on another site has a picture of a citation following the pilot's award of the DFC, and this clearly states that Liberator G "George" was from 86 Squadron. Best wishes - Susan Thorp
My thanks for your E-mail, although we strive to be accurate with the information on Ahoy, I have attached a page from the German U-Boat net, where I took my original data about the sinking of U-534, then it was reported that a Liberator from 206 Squadron sank her, they now report what you tell me, it should have been stated she was sunk by G for George Liberator from Squadron 86. If you have the DFC citation for the pilot, I would be pleased to add that to our story, and we will acknowledge your help, thank you very much. My friend Terry Kearns in Atlanta Georgia keeps the site ticking over as my Web Master, I do the resaerch and writing. The blame about any wrong information is mine alone. Our best wishes from America and Australia. Mac. Gregory.
TK, By a Bcc about the sinking of U-Boat U-534 from Susan Thorp in England you will see that I had a Liberator from Squadron 206 sinking her, as reported originally on the U-Boat net, but that should now read Liberator G for George, from Squadron 86 was responsible for this sinking. Could you please change it Terry? the URL is: http://ahoy.tk-jk.net/macslog/GermanUBoatU-534.html Please acknowledge Susan Thorp as our source for this correction. My thanks, Mac. |
