Seeking picture of TSMV Suffolk in wartime grey for painting

Sir,

Chanced upon your website and wondered if you could point me in the right direction?

My father-in-law (William Martin) served as a cadet on the TSMV Suffolk at the start of WW2; I would like to paint this ship in her wartime grey (complete with gun emplacements, liferaft, etc) but cannot find any pictures of her during this time. I have a single picture of her in 'civilian' clothes (NZSC) so it is possible to work with this (and use some reference photos of other ships to assist in wartime fittings) if I cannot find anything else, and use 'artistic license' to get around any problem areas.

Is there a chance you may know the whereabouts of any good reference information?

Would you also be able to assist me with obtaining any plans for the Suffolk as it is difficult to work out details of the 'superstructure' from the single photo?

Out of interest, Bill Martin went on to serve on other NZSC ships as 2nd Officer and Chief Officer (hope I've got these ranks OK?).

I appreciate any assistance you can give me.

Steve Drinkwater

Steve,

I regret I am unable to turn up anything at all about a Troopship named Suffolk. I guess you will need to use the picture you have, suitably doctored to account for her in a wartime trooper role.

Was she owned by the NZ Shipping company? if so, I would contact them to inquire about any plans of this ship, they may have, or ask them who built her in the first place, and go to them.

Sorry, I have been of no help to you.

Best wishes for 2004.

Mac.
