Sam Hiller died on the 4th January 2009 aged 87

Hello Mac,
I am so sorry to read of your health problems and I hope you are feeling much better and have many happy years ahead..

It is with much sadness that I inform you my father, Sam Hiller died on the 4th January 2009 aged 87.

I wrote to you on several previous occassions and I sent you some photos of my Uncle Len (Hiller) who was a German POW for 5 years after the sinking of the Voltaire, which you have placed on your website.

I would like to amend several errors relating to my father's service which was stated in one my of letters also showing on your website. We now have a copy of his service records.

Dad trained at the HMS Caledonia from 21st August 1937 aged 16.5yrs until the 3rd June 1938 before being posted to :

HMS Diomede, HMS Hermes, HMS Royal Oak, HMS Jupiter and finally the Aircraft Carrier, HMS Victorious from early 1941 until October 1946. He was discharged from the navy in 1949.

Through your website I was contacted by the daughter of one of the men shown in the first photo (3 sailors) and she has very kindly passed on some letters written to her father by my Uncle during his time as a POW. I have since passed along these letters to Len Hiller's sons. It is a small world after all and getting smaller thanks to the Internet.

My Dad was the last of the six boys of the Hiller family who served in the Royal Navy during WWII. They are survived by their older sister, Theodora (Dolly) who is 100 and living in Adelaide.

Thank you for an amazing website.

Kind regards

Jackie Welsh (nee Hiller)
Glenrowan, Victoria.

Jackie,

Sorry to hear about your Dad, and  as requested we will amend his service details on AHOY.

I am srtill battling the effects of the Steroids that I am taking daily to build up my platelet level, a recent blood test had them at 214,000 which is a good level, we will not know if they hold up from my liver making them, until I finally get off Steroids in about 2 weeks.

The side effects from them play havoc with my blood/sugar levels, making it a nightmare to take the insulin I need to inject 5 times daily at present. If they are too low, I am unable to have insulin for fear of a hypo, and it takes time and the consumption of honey/ jelly beans etc to build them up. I dare not go off to bed if after midnight my blood/sugar reading is not sufficiently high, in case I again have a hypo whilst in bed. On top of all that, my left leg went septic, and I am on the third course of anti biotics, every 6 hours, the first script affected me with nausea, and tummy ache, changing the next lot fixed that problem.

Its a juggling act ( I should perhaps join a CIRCUS ) to get it all right, but at least I understand all that I must achieve to keep on top of it, but after a major scare when my platelets dropped to only a 1,000, and I was close to bleeding to death, I am pleased to have survived, I still have too much to conclude, and life is too good to give it all away just yet.

Thank you for your interest, and I am so sorry that you have had such sad news about your Dad.

My very best wishes for the rest of 2009.

Mac.
