Researching Queen Mary and HMS Curacoa collision off the coast of Ireland on Oct. 2, 1942 Dear Mac, My name is Jackie Lay and I am a researcher for the Canadian TV show Disasters of the Century. We are presently working on an episode of our show about the Queen Mary and HMS Curacoa collision off the coast of Ireland on Oct. 2, 1942. I am looking for Historians and witnesses/survivors to interview. Do you know of any? I was wondering if you could help me in some other ways too. First, I was wondering if there was anyway you could help me contact Richard K. Russel. His father survived the collision and Richard wrote you a letter which is posted on your web-site. I understand if you can not give out any personal information, but even if you can point me to a city. Also I am trying to locate Patrick Holmes who lived in Cottesloe, Western Australia. he was aboard the HMS Curacoa and survived and he wrote the book "Queen Mary and the Cruiser." Do you know of him or have you heard where he might now be? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I thank you for your time, Jackie Lay
I regret I am not going to be of much help to you. Regarding your questions: 1. No I do not know of any historians or wittnesses/survivors for the HMS Curacoa tragedy. Having been a Naval Officer in the Royal Australian Navy for 20 years and served the whole of WW2 at sea I was interested to write about the tragedy, having worked in the Atlantic over 1940/1941. 2. Every now and then I clean out my E-Mail address book as I get a lot of mail about AHOY, and I am sorry to say I have not kept Richard's details. 3. I have searched the Australian White pages telephone numbers for Patrick Holmes in Cottesloe WA, and drawn a blank. He may well have died by now. So, I am totally useless for your project, for which I can only say sorry, and wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mac. Gregory. Is there any way you could post the following on your web-site: The Canadian TV show Disasters of the Century is looking for ancestors of/or survivors and witnesses of the Queen Mary and HMS Curacoa collision off the coast of Ireland on Oct. 2, 1942. If you have any information please contact:
If you can't no worries. If you can, is there a charge if so before you proceed can you let me know the cost? I will only need it posted for about month and a half!! Take care and thank you for your time!!
