Postcards, a nice one of HMAS Canberra and another of HMS Shropshire

Hi Mac.

I recently picked up a couple of old photo postcards, a nice one of HMAS Canberra and another of HMS Shropshire (pre '42). The Canberra one, possibly circa mid-1930's, is quite a nice shot of the cruiser moving slowly through calm waters. Unfortunately my scanner is playing up at the moment (the kids?!) but I will email you copies when fixed if you like.

The one of the Shroppie, though not quite as clear, has the following interesting inscription on the back: a glimpse into the life of a WREN newly stationed at Malta perhaps, as war was looming (though she sounds cheerful enough - must have been exciting for a young woman from England):

"Address  Regina Hotel, Sliema, Malta
30th Aug. 39
Well, here we are & this is the boat we came on. Cannot give you any details but nothing dangerous. Had a most interesting trip across France, will write more fully later on. Very hot & of course no time to obtain kit, so have bought shorts & stockings. Had two lovely bathes, like a warm bath. Rushed thro (sic) the Mediterranean from Marseille full speed, simply loved it. Issued with one blanket & slept on deck, swarms of people. Cheerio, write soon. Love to you all, Jan" (or Jane, or Jean).

I found an association website for RN men and women who served on Malta (http://www.lascarisassoc.britanianet.co.uk), so will send them a copy also. You never know, the person who sent this 65 years ago is still out there somewhere.

Hope this finds you well.

Kind regards,
