Margaret Ellen Taylor survived sinking of Athenia - which ship picked her up? Hello, I was trying to find the passenger survivor lists of those picked up by the Knute Nelson. My grandmother, Margaret Ellen Taylor was a survivor and from my understanding was picked up by the Norwegian tanker, the Knute Nelson. I did see one list of those survivors who were taken to Galway Ireland. I didn't see her name. She would have been going back to Montreal Canada so perhaps she was somewhere besides Galway. Would you have any information to direct me to. Thanks so much. Sharon Gigliotti
Nice to hear from you. I have a list of those Athenia survivors who were picked up by the tanker Knute Nelson and taken to Galway, its from the London Times, and I am yet to reproduce it on AHOY. However there is no mention of your Grandmother, Mary Ellen Taylor on it. The City of Flint also collected survivors and they went directly to Halifax, but Margaret is not on that list. I have all the names of the 93 passengers who died that awful night, and of course Margaret is, as expected, not in that group. The British Destroyers Electra and Escort also picked up survivors and took them to Gourock on the River Clyde in Scotland, that list of Athenia survivors still eludes me, so perhaps your Grandmother was amongst those rescued by the destroyers. I have searched for that list for some years without success, so am afraid I cannot suggest where you may find it. Sorry I am not of much use to you in your search for Grandmother's name on a survivor list. Best wishes, back to letters index |
