Liberty Ship cargo boom lifting capacity

I would appreciate it if you could please let me know where i could find information on a liberty ships cargo boom capacity and how heavier lifts than the booms capacity could be managed.  thanks.

I believe the Liberty Ship Cargo boom had a lifting capacity of 5 tons.

In 1944, E.A.Byrne had her 5 ton capacity booms replaced with 10 ton capacity ones over holds 1 and 5. On the 13th. of July 1944 at Port Chicago when loading ammunition she blew up, and was destroyed. For greater lifts than those handled by the ship's lifting capacity, dockside cranes when loading and then unloading on arrival would cope with the extra weight.

At an open roadstead when anchored and unloading I think that maximum lifts would be limited to the boom lifting capacity. One of the two remaining Liberty Ships still around in the US is the Jeremiah O'Brien, at San Fransisco, their E-Mail address is: shipkeeper@ssjeremiahobrien.org

I suggest you contact them should you need more information.

Sincerely,
Mackenzie Gregory.
