Italian cruiser San Giorgio sunk in Tobruk. 1941, Geoffrey Keyes VC

May 05, 2010

I was in Tobruk last week, and can confirm that the aged Italian cruiser San Giorgio was sunk there in early 1941 and, settled on the bottom, became a mini-island anti-aircraft gun emplacement, thus attracting further fury from all sides...

Geoffrey Keyes VC is buried in Benghazi Commonwealth war cemetery, although I believe he came ashore at Ras el Hilal near Appollonia - where I used to camp as a kid in the scouts, as it happens...

Bill,

My thanks for that.

Best regards,
Mac.
