Getting a copy of my Monograph about the Sinking of Canberra at the Battle of Savo Island I don't still have the original which should have read HMAS Canberra, but Gabriel in Italy asked where he might get a copy of my Monograph about the Sinking of Canberra at the Battle of Savo Island on the 9th. of August 1942. My response was that the easiest vway would be for him to take a copy from AHOY, and he had my permission to get a hard copy from our Web Site. You have the rest of our correspondence here. Best,
Gregory, Was H.M.A.S.Canberra modernised before her sinking? In particular her belt ( and the number of her 4inch aa guns) were like H.M.S.Cornwall and consorts? Were her funnels still higher that in the British ones? With my best regards
No Canberra had not undergone a refit before she was sunk. She was still fitted with with 4 single 4 inch AA guns, unlike her sister ship Australia who had 4 by 4 twin 4 inch AA guns. The funnels were still higher. Yes the ship was found by Robert Ballard in 2500 feet of water, sitting upright on her bottom, in Iron bottom Sound, but some damage has occured due to corrosion. The report of the find is found in the Book "The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal: Exploring the Ghost Fleet of the South Pacific" by Robert Ballard, whom I met when he came to Australia to publicise his book. Volume 1 of Gill's History of the Royal Australian Navy is out of print, but an occasional one appears on the second hand market here in Australia. Perhaps you should search the second hand books on some of the book sites in my country. Best wishes, nice to talk with you.
