George Sneddon lost on Athenia?

Hi Mac,

I do tracing for people who are looking for information on Scottish relatives. I was speaking to a friend’s mother this morning and she asked me to look and see if I could find any information about her father. He served as a boilerman or stoker on the Athenia and was killed when she was hit. I haven’t found his name on any of the lists of crew members so far. She is 82 now and told me she was at her work when a man came to see her. He said he was her father’s friend and that her father had died on this ship. She hadn’t been told by her mother because her parents had separated. She says she was about 17 years old at the time and was shocked because no one had told her at the time. His name was George Sneddon and she says he would have been in his 40’s. I am going into the Records Office in Edinburgh within the next week or so. If I find a listing for him I will let you know.

Kindest Regards

Liz Moore

Liz,

Thank you for your message, here is the list of crew members from Athenia who died, but it does not contain George Sneddon.

It is my understanding that 112 people died that night, made up of 93 passengers, and 19 crew.

It does seem doubtful that George died that night, I do not have a complete record of all survivors, those picked up by the British destroyers, Electra, Escort and Fame, in general elude me.

I would be grateful to learn if you find anything in the records in Edinburgh.

Thanks to Billy McGee http://www.british-merchant-navy.co.uk for this information 16 October 2004
