From Daughter of a Merchant Seaman about USS Southland
Hi....
I am researching my fathers seaman achievements and don't know where to turn in my road to locate information. He was aboard USS Southland " A merchant ship" and was awarded medals from the US Congress along with the remaining crew members.
Can you give me some direction on where I could go to find additional information or news printed articles. I am trying to reproduce his scrap book now lost....
Thank You....
Fay Heywood.... Daughter of a Merchant Seaman..
Fay,
I will be sending you some E-Mails with some information about USS Southland.
Mac. Gregory.
THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING TO MY QUESTION, THE INFORMATION REALLY HELPS, I ALSO RECEIVED TODAY ABOUT FRIENDS SERVE ABOARD, I REALLY FEEL BAD THAT I DIDN'T ASK MY FATHER MORE, NOW THAT HE IS GONE, IT REALLY HELPS TO READ ALL I CAN ABOUT WHAT HE MIGHT HAVE GONE THRU IN THE NAVY, AGAIN THANKS,
JANE
HI THERE MAC,
I HAVE JUST READ A LETTER FROM THE DAUGHTER OF A MERCHANT SEAMAN, RE SS SOUTHLAND A RIVERBOAT. MY FATHER WAS ON THAT RIVERBOAT TOO, HE WAS ON THE OUTWARD JOURNEY BRINGING HER FROM USA. THEY WERE IN CONVOY RB1, A DECOY CONVOY. 17 U BOATS WERE DEPLOYED TO ATTACK THE CONVOY, WHERE HMS VETERAN WAS SUNK AND SOME OF THE RIVERBOATS. I WOULD GLADLY FORWARD INFO IF THE LADY CONCERNED WISHES TO HAVE MY EMAIL ADDRESS. I WOULD BE ALSO INTERESTED IF ANYONE ELSE HAS REPLIED WITH RELATIVES FROM THE BOAT. DAD IS NOW 82 AND WAS A D.E.M.S. GUNNER ON THAT TRIP.
I HAVE A PICTURE AND POSTCARDS OF HER IF REQUIRED I WILL SCAN AND SEND.
REGARDS
JACKIE MARSH
ENGLAND....DAUGHTER OF D.E.M.S GUNNER SS SOUTHLAND
Jackie,
Nice to hear from you again.
I get a lot of E-Mails and cull them now and then, unfortunately Fay Heywood's address was not kept.
I hope if we put up your message on AHOY, she may see it, and contact me again, and then of course I will give her your address.
I am getting a few of such messages, and need to be more diligent in keeping addresses in my address book.
I am sure we would like to include pictures of SS Southland up on our site, and other people interested might find them.
Denise and I are just back yesterday from three weeks in Europe, i/c two seven day cruises to the Western end of the Mediterranean, and then in the Adriatic area, just so much history in the area, the mind boggles at its antiquity.
Like your Dad I too am 82, give him my best wishes please.
Very best regards,
Mac.
