Forthcoming book about RAN sailors
Hi Mac, My name is Laurie Hadley and I am writing a book about RAN. Well, about the people who are and have served in the navy. What I want is for the personal to their own story. So I'm looking for some of the sailers that would be willing to put on audio tape their story of their life in the navy and how it has effected their lives their familys places that they have seen ships that they served on and any stories that might be of interest. I just don't know how to get in touch with these people. Could please help me with this Mac. Warmest regards
You may not be aware that the Department of Veterans Affairs is in the midst of recording the oral history of some 200 veterans around Australia on both film and tape. In all, they plan to cover some 20,000 hours of the stories and life of these veterans. The film will go into an archives for future use by historians and interested people, the recorded stories will be put on the internet, starting from the end of this month of August. I happened to have my story filmed and recorded over two 4 hour sessions last April, being the first one interviewed in Victoria. it seems to me Laurie, that this project by Veterans Affairs, being conducted for them by a Production Company from Orange in NSW, called Mullion Creek Productions may have preempted your intended book. Of course this project will all three services, and not just the RAN. Let me know if you still wish to continue, and if so, how many people do you want to talk to? Regards,
Thank you for your quick reply to me re our book. The book was prompted out of my interest in the navy. I have an interest in the sea since I was a child. I have Built many model sailing ships all from scratch. I built the First Fleet which is on permanent display in the Museum of Sydney and I am still building ships. As for the book my wife Lynne and a friend are writing it with me. We want about 10 people to tell their stories in the book, just as they tell it word for word more or less. Warmest regards,
We're off to New Zealand on Saturday next, we will be back home on the 31st. of August. I will address your problem of finding 10 ex RAN sailors on our return, how do you want to handle it? I imagine you would want the stories on tape, and anyone who I ask to participate may not have a tape recorder available. Are you wanting to interview the individuals yourself? You are in Sydney, I, and some whom I may ask will be in Melbourne. Have you thought through the logistics entailed in your proposed project? Best regards,
It's me again . I just been to your site I think that it's brilliant I'll go right into it to night and have a good look at it. I see that your ex navy, yes? I was in the army myself but most of my uncles were sailers. My wife Lynne did a talk at the King-Hall Navy History Conference in Canberra last month, she talked about Australia's first four governors who were all naval officers. So you can see we have a big interest in the navy and maritime history. Catch you later Mac regards Laurie. |
