Letters
Floyd Russell served aboard the USS Mugford Hello, Mac. I just read, with interest, the letter about the USS Mugford. ("Father was in USS Mugford at Battle of Savo Island") I was an advertising representative for many years for the daily newspaper, The Palladium-Item, in Richmond, Indiana, USA. Since I was a US Navy veteran of WWII, I soon became friends with a man, also a WWII US Navy veteran, who worked in our photography department. The man's name was Floyd Russell and he served aboard the USS Mugford during the entire war. Incidentally, the Mugford was also present when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Sadly, my friend died not too awfully long ago. A fine, quiet man who served his country well as a sailor and as a very good newspaper man. Thanks again for your outstanding work, Mac. Roy Brown
Thank you for your letter, I am continually pleased and suprised when AHOY manages to ring a bell out there via the internet. I was aware that Mugford had been in Pearl when the Japanese attacked, she was the same class as USS Blue that took me off my burning and crippled cruiser HMAS Canberra at Savo, and was part of our US Task Force at different times in the war in the Pacific. For your interest I have attached a photo of her in 1945. Your kind comments about AHOY are appreciated, my web master and friend Terry Kearns in Atlanta Georgia, deserves a great deal of credit for the way our site presents itsself to the world, my only contribution is to scribble away and research various topics that Terry whips into shape and uploads. Nice to hear from you, it was good of you to take the time to write. Best regards from Australia. Mac. back to letters index |
