Father may have served on HMAS Canberra

Hello Mr. Gregory,

My name is Patricia McClain, my maiden name is Bezokas. I have been trying to find some information on my father. His name was Walter John Bezokas. He died when I was two, and I do not have anything on him. I would just like to know if you happen to have any pictures of the crew from the Canberra. If you could give me anything I would be grateful. Please feel free to email me anytime.

Thank You,
Patricia

Dear Patricia,

Thank you for your message, no unfortunately I do not have any photographs of the crew from HMAS Canberra. I could send you some photos of the ship if you so wished, just ask me for them, also you may not be aware that a small book about the ship and her life was published by the Naval Historical Society of Australia Inc some years ago, it is called:  HMAS Canberra, by Alan Payne and was published in 1973.

THe NHS address is: The Hon Secretary, Building 25, Garden Island, Sydney, NSW 2001.

Their Phone No. 02 9359 2372 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It only runs to 112 pages, and if you found it to be out of print, I could have my own copy photo copied, and then I could mail it to you, please tell me if you would like that done, it would be a pleasure to help.

On the Government web site WWW.WW2roll.gov.au are recorded all the names of a million people who served in the armed services over WW2, but when I typed in Walter John Bezokas, no record came up Patricia.

When did your father serve in the RAN? I assumed he was in Canberra when we were sunk on the 9th. of August 1942.

I await hearing from you again.

Regards,

Mac. Gregory.

Dear Patricia,

Last December you wrote to me about your Late Father Walter, asking about him serving in HMAS Canberra.

At that time I was unable to be specific if he was on board her at the time we were sunk at Savo on the 9th. of August 1942. I have recently acquired a complete list of all who were on board that fateful night, I have just run through that complete document, but your Father does not appear any where.

Best regards,

Mackenzie Gregory.
