Family of 7, only 3 survive Ewdokia Kucharczuk and her three children: sons, Stefan and Jakeb, and daughter Aleksandra were among those killed in sinking of Athenia

November 10, 2009

Mac,

I see on your website mentioned that a document or certificate can be acquired if you have a relative listed as killed on the Athenia.

My grandmother, Ewdokia Kucharczuk and her three children: sons, Stefan and Jakeb, and daughter Aleksandra were among those killed.

My uncle Jan, mom Neonila and grandfather Spirydon were
rescued. My mother, Neonila (Nina) Kucharczuk, turned 89
on Oct. 23, 2009

Could you please provide me with some information on this.

Ruth Kasianiuk

Ruth,

Nice to hear from you.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site includes the "Debt of Honour Register" it is the Commission's
database listing the 1..7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two world wars and the 23,000 cemeteries, memorials and other locations worldwide where they are commemorated. The register can
also be searched for details of the 67,000 Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action in the
Second World War.

But it only includes the civilian deaths from Commonwealth countries, which of course precludes any one from Poland who died in the Athenia tragedy, thus your relatives are not listed.

I should have been more specific when I indicated a certificate could be downloaded and printed. So sorry!

Please pass on my best regards to your Mother Nina.

Regards,
Mac.
