Eric Lloyd was lost on HMS Gould on 1st March 1944, Albert Pattinson was on HMS Mourne when it went down on 15th June 1944 Hello Mr Gregory My name is Eddie Smith, I live in Stockport Cheshire UK. My uncle, Albert Pattinson was on HMS Mourne when it went down on 15th June 1944. My Mothers first husband Eric Lloyd was lost on HMS Gould on 1st March 1944, both sunk by u-boats. My Mother, who is now 91, cannot believe the information available all these years later. At the time all she received was a telegram, no details at all. Both Eric and Albert are commemorated on the Naval Memorial on Plymouth Hoe, something my Mother knew nothing about until earlier this year. We recently visited Plymouth and took some photographs of the panels. It was a very moving moment. My Father, who sadly passed away in 2002, also served in he Royal Navy, in the Fleet Air Arm aboard HMS Unicorn, a light aircraft carrier. My Father never spoke about the war but I do have some of photographs taken by the ships photographer showing a number of aircraft (Fairy Swordfish) that crashed on landing. Best regards to you Yours Sincerely
It is great to hear from you, please give your Mother my kindest regards and best wishes. I can just imagine how she felt when you visited the Naval Memorial at Plymouth, it is a wonderful memorial in a truly lovely position. I am always pleased when Ahoy is able to connect people with the past, especially when they are Navy oriented. As you say, we are now unearthing much more detail about both World wars and the exploits of our sailors than was ever available at the specific time. Thank you again for taking your time and troublke to contact me. Regards. |
