Cammel Laird's ship building history

see "Cammell Laird: Shipbuilders to the World" at Birkenhead, England by Alex Naughton

Hi Mac,

My name is Matt Wardle and I am a graphic designer from Liverpool England. I am currently researching Camel Lairds ship building history. I intend to produce a graphic representation of the ship building history and the people involved in the building of all the ships ever to leave the yard.

I came across your site while searching on google and see that you have access to the listing of all the ships built in Lairds from the first laid keel. I would very much like to know where  I can obtain this information as it is really the keystone in my research. I also need to find details of the vessels dimensions and there registered tonnage.

I hope you can help a fellow seafarer out!

Yours faithfully

Matt Wardle

Matt,

The work on AHOY about Cammel Lairds in not mine, it clearly states it is Alex Naughton who is the author, and he kindly gave me approval to reproduce his work, which is acknowledged.

I am able to give you the site where you will find all the ships built by this yard, but it does not list the details of each ship, I will also send separately some other other detail about CL's which should be of use.

You have set yourself a mammoth task, as over 1000 ships have been built by this yard.

Good luck,
Mac.Gregory.

Matt,

One of my correspondents has sent this advice about getting more details on Cammell Laird built ships from the Lloyd's Register.

You should now be set to get all the information you need for your project.

Best wishes,
Mac.

Mac

Hope you are well,we haven't contacted for a while !

I was browsing this evening, first time for a while too, and saw Matt Wardle's mail about CLs shipyard. If he can obtain a list of ships built he will certainly be able to get other data from the annually printed LLoyd's Register, held in any good reference Library (particularly in Liverpool where he lives!) and listing all sorts of details on the ship's construction. I recently did this for a couple of WW1 vessels and was pleased with the range of Registers still maintained, back into the 1800s !

I am doing well with my mission to resurrect Father-in-Law and uncle's war service, and have spent absorbing days at the National Archives, not  always in a disciplined manner as there is so much to dig in to !

Keep up the good work !

All the best

Terry

Hello Matt,

The attached E-Mail from Terry with whom I correspond, Has two more Cammell Laird references for you.

They may fill out some more detail if your Liverpool library has copies.

Hope your quest if progressing.

Best regards,

Mac.

Mac
Found myself in the Special Collections Archive of Southampton Library today. Had a bit of time to spare so took a look for books on Cammell Laird. Saw one small volume on the first 150 years of the business, but not a lot of data about how many built or names. There was some interesting snippets about the early years and the range of vessels built over that time.

It's reference in the Library (under a system called the Duodecimal !) is 338.4762382. There is no ISBN number, it is simply produced by Cammell Laird themselves. It is possible that Liverpool Library use this same system and have a copy there ! There are some fascinating facts about the early ships built. Some were in kit form and transported in bits. In 1834 the "John Randolph" a freighter, was shipped to the Savannah River in USA and riveted together on the river bank ! in 1836 two paddle steamers for exploration were built in kit form for the East Indies Company on the River Euphrates, shipped in pieces to Syria, and carried by Camel to the Euphrates to be constructed ! We don't know we're alive !

The second book about Cammell Laird they had was in a Maritime Store and not available in the time I had today. It is called Men Of Iron, written by D Hollett,Library ref 338.762382. No ISBN again.
Your correspondent may find a bit more of his needs in one or other of these.

Take it easy !
Best wishes
Terry
