Battle of Tsushima Straits 1905 Mac Read your feature on this battle ("Russia versus Japan. The Battle of Tsushima Straits, 1905"). I have three very large antique books in my computer room (among all the other junk, that is) entitled The Fight for Freedom-Japan's War with Russia, a detailed account of all hostilities between the two nations from 1904-1906, a book for each year, with hundreds of photos and illustrations, quite a few dealing with the naval side of the conflicts. They originated in Uncle's house and we now keep them. There is a full account of this battle in Book 1 of the series, which I would not have read had you not made the effort to publish your account! Should you ever need any info or pics I am willing to search them and digitise them to your needs. We also had 8 or 9 very large books on WW1 issued on a "London Illustrated"style of publishing and bound in hardback. These, in my ignorance at the time, I gave away to a work colleague as he had an all-consuming interest in the subject. He still does, and has agreed for me to borrow them back one at a time and read them as I too have a high interest in that phase of our nation's history !! Keep at it !
The Battle of Tushuma Straits was a defining one for Japan to become a world force, particularly in the Pacific Arena. Thank you for your offer of information, one of the joys of the Internet for me, is the contacts made around this globe of ours, how distance becomes of no real momemt, and the friendships that blossom from a mutual interest. Without a study of history, and in that context, for me, having spent 20 of my formative years in the RAN, and the 6 years of WW2 at sea, that includes Naval History, how can we contemplate the future without having a working relationship with our past? That may have come out in a convoluted way, but you will know what I am on about Terry. I have an excellent book by two Austalians, Denis and Peggy Warner The Tide at Sunrise, A History of the Russo- Japanese War 1904-1905. they have also done Disaster in the Pacific, their slant on the Battle of Savo Island, in which I was involved, and I read and commented on the draft of that work for them some years ago. What a shame you gave up your WW1 books before realising their intrinsic value, at least you still have access to that treasure trove. I will dig out some details of the convoy from 1941, a long account of probably the defining Battle against our Convoys and the German U-Boats in the Battle of the Atlantic is at this URL on Ahoy: http://ahoy.tk-jk.net/macslog/TheBattleForConvoyONS5.26.html when you have a moment it may be of interest to you. Here I go, rabbiting on, and taking up your valuable time, but I do appreciate our contact. Trust your day and night are productive. Regards, |
